Each year, about 500,000 people with spinal injuries undergo spinal fusion procedures in the United States. A significant number of these patients will experience chronic post-op pain and diminished range of movement. To address this, renowned San Francisco spine surgeon Dr. Kenneth Light has established the Institute For Spinal Motion Preservation™.

Dr. Light accepts patients from around the world for primary and revision spinal procedures with an emphasis on preserving or regaining fuller mobility and reducing chronic post-injury pain or lingering post-operative pain from a primary spinal fusion or other spinal procedure.

Dr. Light, known among many of his patients as the “Doctor Of Last Resort” for the treatment of spinal injuries employs advanced technology and procedures including spinal disc replacement and “Spinal Fusion Reversal”.

This video from ABC News shows the story of a woman who was left suffering from severe pain and diminished range of movement for years after a neck injury and subsequent fusion procedure. Dr. Light performed a fusion reversal by removing the fusion hardware and placing artificial discs, which greatly reduced her pain and restored her range of motion closer to normal levels.

Spine surgeon Dr. Kenneth Light says preliminary studies show that 3-level cervical (neck) spinal disc replacement can bring the same or superior results as 1- and 2-level disc replacement. This video shows a female patient who suffered a painful, debilitating injury on the job and details the spinal disc replacement surgery performed by Dr. Light as an alternative to spinal fusion to relieve her pain and improve her range of motion.

During disc replacement surgery, the pain-generating disc is removed, the disc height is restored, and an implant that allows the potential for motion is inserted into the disc space. Dr. Light says that back pain from injury or disease can be relieved with the benefit of rapid recovery time for most patients. “Most patients experience little downtime after undergoing the procedure, and they can often return to most regular activities in a matter of days.” For information, visit www.Dr.KennethLight.com.
